On behalf of the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society International, we would like to respond to the recent publication in your journal [1]. This article claims that animal models are the best way to find new treatments for human diseases. We suggest that, in fact, the opposite is true today. There are many 21st-century non-animal approaches which improve on animal experimentation and are likely to provide a far better way to find new treatments.
