Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide [1]. Acute exacerbation of COPD is a frequent cause of admission to an emergency department and of hospitalization. While exacerbations of COPD are believed to be mainly due to infectious and/or pollution [1], their causes are usually complex [2].
