Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) [1]. The presence of CVD has been described as the main cause of death among individuals with T2D and is associated with a reduction in life expectancy of up to 12 years. Reduced life expectancy has been also described among individuals with T2D and no CVD; sixty percent of this difference in survival can be attributed to cardiovascular events [1,2].
