A tripling of obesity in the last 50 years has resulted in more than 650 million individuals being obese worldwide [1],[2]. Obesity is associated with several important non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease and some cancers, as well as a number of other conditions leading to an elevated risk of mortality [3–5].
