Identification of patients with sepsis is a difficult task. Until now, the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria have been recommended to identify patients with significant infection. However, the SIRS criteria have been shown to have low validity, and the need for improvement has been known for some time [1].
