The etymology of Internal Medicine dates to an important development in the approach to patient care arising in 19th Century Germany and reflected by the term, Innere Medezin. This marked the transition of the study of the phenomena of disease toward the internal and underlying physiologic and pathologic causes as established through anatomical pathology and laboratory investigations [1].
