The EFIM General Assembly convened on 5 March 2025 in Florence, bringing together representatives from 38 countries, representing 40 national societies of internal medicine, the highest number reached so far.
Prof. Ricardo Gómez Huelgas presented an overview of EFIM’s activities and achievements over the past year, highlighting the organization’s continued growth, successful initiatives, the launch of new working groups, the 9th EFIM Day, expanding collaborations with other organizations and partners, as well as upcoming projects and educational activities. He expressed his gratitude for the active participation and support of all member countries, which continue to drive EFIM’s success.Only a few member countries were unable to attend the General Assembly and ECIM 2025.
Following the stable financial forecast presented by Prof. Pietrantonio, EFIM Treasurer, the General Assembly proceeded with the election of new members to the EFIM Executive Committee.
We are pleased to announce the election of Prof. Margus Lember from Estonia as the new EFIM Secretary General. We would like to extend our congratulations to him and we are looking forward to his leadership in advancing EFIM’s mission.
Additionally, we would like to congratulate Dr. Fredrik von Wowern from Sweden on his election as President Elect. With his expertise and dedication, we are confident that he will further strengthen EFIM’s work, and imporve the collaboration across Europe from North to South.
We would also like to extend our appreciation to all candidates who put themselves forward for these roles and we would like to thank Prof. Unal from the Turkish Society and Dr. Ruza from the Latvian Society for their participation in the election process.
Furthermore we are delighted to welcome new Ordinary and Associate Members to the EFIM community. The following societies were approved by the General Assembly:

EFIM is now comprising of 48 national societies from 45 countries in Europe and outside becoming the leading professional organisation for internists in Europe and worldwide.
Furthermore, we would like to congratulate FADOI Italy on winning the bid to host the next ESIM Winter School. We look forward to an outstanding educational program under FADOI’s leadership.We also extend our appreciation to the Algerian Society, the Estonian Society, and the Turkish Society for their excellent bid presentations. We hope they will be prepared to host future editions of the Winter School in the coming years.
We are also pleased to announce that Prof. Giancarlo Agnelli has been re-appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Internal Medicine for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. His leadership continues to increase the journal’s impact and contribution to internal medicine research.
Finally as Special Recognition and heartfelt thank you goes to Prof. Dror Dicker, who has stepped down from the Executive Committee after six years of dedicated service to EFIM as President Elect, President and Past President. His contributions have been imperative in growing EFIM in the past six years, and we are incredibly grateful for his commitment and leadership.
In addition, Prof. Gómez Huelgas reported that the ECIM 2025 Congress in Florence will be a great success, with 2,200 registrations 82 countries worldwide.
This year's congress achievement highlights EFIM’s growth and strong engagement in the internal medicine community.
