We would like to thank all the members of the EFIM national societies who joined us virtually on Thursday, 18 March prior to the 19th European Congress of Internal Medicine. More than 80 Assembly members, Young Internists and Executive Committee members, representing 30 national societies, participated in the EFIM General Assembly.
We would like to thank all our societies on the active participation and the approval of EFIM planned projects.
The EFIM President, Prof. Nicola Montano, welcomed the participants to the 2nd virtual General Assembly giving a short overview of the EFIM activities and the achievements during the challenging 2020 focusing on the figures from ECIM 2021, the activities of EFIM Working Groups and EFIM’s educational and institutional collaboration. Prof. Montano informed the members of the General Assembly that the number of participants at ECIM 2021 had reached 1100 participants from 67 different countries. Presentation of the current financial affairs and accounts by EFIM Treasurer, Dr. Valentin Kokorin followed approving EFIM accounts.
The meeting continued with the elections of the new EFIM President-Elect, Prof. Ricardo Gómez Huelgas, a very strong candidate from the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine. Prof. Gómez Huelgas presented his future vision and plans for EFIM. The members of the General Assembly elected Prof. Gómez Huelgas EFIM President Elect by majority. Prof. Montano congratulated Prof. Gómez Huelgas for his strong input and great ideas and welcomed him to the EFIM Executive Committee. Next on the agenda was the handover of the presidency, and bidding farewell to Prof. Runolfur Palsson, EFIM Past President who served EFIM Executive Committee in the past six years. Prof. Montano, acknowledged Prof. Palsson for all his efforts and dedication to promoting EFIM in the past and handed his presidency to Dr. Dror Dicker.
Both EFIM journals’ Editor in Chief, Prof. Agnelli and Dr. Kellett gave progress overview on the journals: EJIM and EJCRIM addressing the societies to promote the journals to their peers and to submit papers and get actively involved in the journals. Reports from the EFIM Working Groups, EFIM Young Internists and EFIM Early Career Subcommittee followed, concluding the meeting with the updates on the progress from EBIM by Prof. Rijk Gans and FDIME activities by FDIME President, Prof. Daniel Sereni.
The General Assembly ended with the announcement of the next EFIM Congress in 2022 ttaking place in Malaga from 10 – 12 March.
Dr. Dicker and Prof. Gómez Huelgas invited the General Assembly members to Malaga to spread the word and promote the congress and wished all the participants a successful virtual ECIM 2021 congress.
