In the US in 2020, 18 % of the population reported use of cannabis in the past year. Use among middle and older-aged people is rising [1,2]; from 2016 to 2018 the percentage of US adults ≥55 years old who reported using cannabis at least once a month increased for women and men with the greatest absolute increases for those 60–69 years [3]. As more jurisdictions regulate the use, sale and production of cannabis for recreational use, health care professionals, consumers, the public, and policy makers need to be better informed about the health effects of recreational cannabis use typical of the general population, in early adulthood and in a middle-aged population [4].
