Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the arteries with endothelial dysfunction favouring leukocytes recruitment into the arterial wall and ensuing lesion growth. The role of neutrophils has long been underestimated in this pathologic process; however, there is growing evidence suggesting its relevance in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis [1]. The primary task of these leukocytes is to defend the body against invading microbes by producing toxic compounds, such as arachidonic acid metabolites, proteolytic enzymes and reactive oxygen species.
