Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic and relapsing inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract with two major forms: Crohn’s disease (CD) (affecting any segment of the gastrointestinal tract) and ulcerative colitis (UC) (affecting the rectum and colon to a variable extent) [1–3]. Over the past decade, the incidence of IBD has increased in the Eastern world and stabilised in the Western world, becoming a global disease [4]. The global crude prevalence of IBD was estimated at 4.90 million in 2019, according to the Global Burden of Disease 2019 analysis.
