Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third most common cardiovascular disease with an incidence of 100–200 cases per 100,000 population per year. Moreover, the incidence rates of PE have been increasing around the world in last years [1]. It is estimated that 1–2% of hospitalized patients experience PE [2].
