Chronic pericardial effusion in the absence of pericardial inflammation often represents both a diagnostic and management dilemma. Although pericardial effusion drainage should be promptly performed in patients with cardiac tamponade, the appropriate management of even large pericardial effusions in asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic patients is still a matter of debate.
