Despite advances in understanding this pathology, recent global data document an estimated incidence of 48.9 million cases annually, with an associated mortality of 11 million [1] and a high socioeconomic cost. Sepsis is a global health problem that has significant repercussions not only in terms of morbidity and mortality but also a substantial socioeconomic impact [2].
