The screening of cognitive impairment is a critical and underestimated problem in the Emergency Department (ED). Overall, dementia remains unrecognized in more than a half of the Italian population, and similar percentages are found in European countries [1]. Thus, it is common to detect cognitive problems in patients attending the ED, mainly in less educated, older, and poorer layers of the population. The identification of subtle cognitive deficits in the ED turns out to be mandatory to plan interventions and to prevent the onset of confusion and delirium after the admission.
