Early Career Activities @ECIM2025

The Early Career Subcommittee organised several sessions and networking events at the European Congress of Internal Medicine in Florence in March 2025. In the Pre-Congress Course: “Career development for Internists - Opportunities & Special Interests” we explored different aspects of an internist’s career:

  • Leading teams and leading change
  • Excellence in medical education
  • Combining clinical research and clinical roles
  • Maintaining work life balance
  • Coaching and working out what’s right for you

The format was interactive and informal, and allowed delegates to ask questions, network and share experiences.

The Controversies Debate: Soft but Hard (How to develop, teach and assess non-technical skills) provided top tips on how to teach and assess non-technical skills such as communication and team working and emphasised how important these are for providing holistic care.

Our Parallel session “Happy Internists & Happy Patients: Improving our work environment & workplace culture and providing safer and more effective care” described the association between physician wellbeing and patient outcomes. Our guest speaker, Claudia Garbrecht, shared her knowledge on how the use of positive psychology can improve our wellbeing and our (and our patients’) experience of care.
The Early Career Speed Mentoring event provided the opportunity to interact closely with mentors experienced in research, education, time management and financial wellbeing and allowed participants to ask questions, learn and explore what matters most for their career development.
The fourth edition of the Early Career “Celebrating Joy in Internal Medicine Award” again invited internists and their teams to submit abstracts on projects that improve clinician wellbeing, team work and workplace culture. We had a very creative and diverse mix of submissions and a very enjoyable finalists’ session of high quality oral presentations. The winner this year was Dr Munir Mohamed Mimun with his project "Levelling Healthcare Professional Training: How Serious Games Enhance Knowledge Acquisition and Application of Clinical Guidelines in Internal Medicine".
