Alcohol is one of the most consumed substances in the world. Among the organic lesions produced by alcohol consumption, liver disease has been the most studied and documented. Alcohol use disorder is the most frequent cause of liver cirrhosis, with an attributable fraction of 50% in the world, that rises to 63–65% in Spain [1]. Alcohol-related liver disease presents as a continuum from liver steatosis, of which 20–40% of patients have fibrosis, to liver cirrhosis in 8–20% of them. Approximately 1.5% of patients with cirrhosis are diagnosed with hepatocarcinoma annually [2].
