The definition of blood pressure (BP) targets in treated hypertensive patients remains controversial. Some Guidelines recommend an ideal systolic BP target of <140 mmHg, with different targets depending on factors including age, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, global cardiovascular risk and tolerability [1–8]. Other guidelines suggest more intensive systolic BP targets in most patients, generally below 130 mmHg [9–11].
