atrial fibrillation (AF) is the arrhythmia most frequently diagnosed in older patients with a prevalence higher than 10 % in subjects ≥70 years [1]. The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), also shows an association with age [1]. According to World Health Organization, frailty is a state in which the ability of older people to cope with acute stressors is compromised by an increased vulnerability determined by age-associated declines in physiological reserve and function across multiple organ systems [2].
