Appropriate blood pressure (BP) control remains the main therapeutic strategy to address the adverse sequelae of hypertension irrespective of a patient's age [1]. A patient group that is continuously expanding are older individuals, with more than 1 billion people worldwide estimated to be older than 60 years of age [2,3]. The well-recognised increase in the incidence of hypertension with advancing age results in approximately 65% of adults aged 60–79 years and 80% of those aged 80 years or older having hypertension [1,4].
