Hyponatremia is the commonest electrolyte imbalance, affecting more than one in 10 patients admitted to hospital [1]. Women, elderly, and individuals with comorbid burdens are generally at greater risk of developing the disorder. Acute symptomatic hyponatremia with cerebral edema is rare, but associated with high mortality unless promptly treated with hypertonic saline [2]. However, most cases of hyponatremia are chronic, developing over time, often without apparent symptoms. Still, chronic hyponatremia is associated with increased mortality in many different settings [3].
