Since 1980 obesity has seen a rapid increase in global prevalence, that has almost doubled in many countries and nowadays affects more than 12% of the general population [1]. Interestingly, the rapid rise in obesity prevalence in the last decades parallels a significant reduction in restorative sleep and an increase in the prevalence of sleep disturbances [2,3].
