The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 1.4 billion people in the world will be aged 60 years and older in 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050, comprising 12–22 % of the global population [1]. Obesity is a chronic, relapsing multifactorial disease of adipose tissue. According to WHO estimates, at least 39 % of adults are with overweight and 13 % are with obesity; and a higher body mass index (BMI) is a significant risk factor for mortality and disease burden [2,3]. During 2007–2010, approximately 35 % of adults in the United States aged 65 years and over were with obesity [4].
