Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in the United States, with an estimated 1.2 million hospital admissions being related to the abuse. Approximately 500,000 episodes of withdrawal symptoms related to alcohol resulted in hospitalizations or emergency department visits, requiring urgent attention from clinicians, with an estimated total cost of $3.5 billion in 2016 [1–3].
