As we head towards the European Parliament elections in 2019, healthcare systems and citizens across Europe are facing unprecedented challenges driven by an ageing population, and increased prevalence of chronic diseases.
Research shows that 550,000 people of working age die from Non-Communicable Diseases in the EU every year. Aside from the significant impact on individual patients, their families and carers, this causes a largely avoidable loss to the EU economy of €115 billion per year, corresponding to 0.8% of GDP[1].

The European Board of Internal Medicine is considering strategies aimed at implementing the new curriculum across Europe, in collaboration with EFIM and the national internal medicine societies.

One of the greatest achievements in 2018 inspired by EFIM Young Internists was launching of the 1st European Advanced School of Internal Medicine (EASIM) in Riga, Latvia, directed by Dr. Ieva Ruža, on 24-26 November 2018. It was a small-scale international course by EFIM tailored to fill the gap in Internal Medicine postgraduate training for Early in Career internists in Europe. The EASIM design was based on the well-proven format of ESIM course for residents.

We would like to thank all the members of the EFIM national societies who joined us in Wiesbaden. This year’s General Assembly was held on 30 August at the RheinMain Congress Centre in Wiesbaden, in conjunction with the 17th European Congress of Internal Medicine.

Join us in Riga for the first ever European Advanced School of Internal Medicine (EASIM) - a finishing school for recently appointed specialists in Internal Medicine.

Another successful EFIM Day was organised at the EFIM Headquarters in Brussels on 16 March, bringing together more than 60 EFIM representatives from 25 national internal medicine societies in Europe. Presidents, board members and Young Internists representatives had an opportunity to take part in discussions about current and future EFIM projects. The EFIM President, Runolfur Palsson, welcomed the attendees to the 4th EFIM Day sharing his perspectives on the achievements of the past year making EFIM become stronger and more visible in Europe.

We would like to thank all the members of the EFIM General Assembly who joined us in Milan. This year’s General Assembly was held on 31 August at the spectacular University of Milan, in conjunction with the 16th European Congress of Internal Medicine.

It is our great pleasure to announce that the 2018 Summer School of Internal Medicine will be held at the Akoesticum in Ede, the Netherlands from 24 – 30 June 2018 under the leadership of Prof. Rijk Gans.
Central theme for this year will be “Internal medicine in Harmony”, in which the following topics will be included:

The first European Summer School of Internal Medicine in Ede (the Netherlands) has taken place from 25th till the 30th of Juny 2017 in Akoesticum.  With fantastic help of The Dutch Society of Internal Medicine (NIV) the committee has organized and carried out an excellent event. The general theme of the week was ‘Internal Medicine in Harmony’, a perfect theme for a school held in a performers arts training centre, in a world where residents have to perform many more roles besides the role of medical expert.
