Cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), are linked by a two-way association [1]. On one hand, 15–20% of patients who are diagnosed with acute VTE are concomitantly affected by cancer [2] and, on the other hand, about 15% of patients with cancer experience VTE during the course of their disease [3].
