Hospitalisations constitute the largest share of healthcare expenditures, and recent evidence suggests that a growing number of admissions are driven primarily by non-acute or non-medical factors rather than by clinical urgency. Non-medical factors are considered to influence hospitalisation decisions in approximately half of the cases and constitute the primary reason for admission in about 7 % of cases [1,2].
