Blood cultures are commonly performed in emergency medical admissions but the extent to which they improve established prognostic algorithms has been infrequently studied [1]. We report on a large dataset of blood cultures on all consecutive emergency medical patients admitted to our institution over 11 years. We were particularly focused on the outcomes for those with a positive blood culture and sought to investigate the relationship with 30-day in-hospital mortality.
