Asthma is a respiratory disease with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. The prevalence in adults is 8.2% and 9.4% in children in the European Union [1]. Severe asthma is a clinical condition affecting patients with different characteristics but similar medical needs. One of the main problems with poorly controlled asthma is the need for access to an emergency department (ED), which places a heavy economic burden on health care systems, given that each emergency visit costs on average 5-fold more than an outpatient visit for asthma [2].
