Arterial hypertension is the most frequent modifiable cardiovascular risk factor and remains a leading cause of premature death worldwide with increasing prevalence [1]. Epidemiologic studies suggest that each year more than 10 million people die from hypertension related diseases globally and hypertension causes millions of disability adjusted life years due to heart failure, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease and stroke [1]. The treatment of hypertension is traditionally based on two main pillars, namely life-style modification for all and pharmacological treatment for most patients [2].
