Modern medical care is increasingly underpinned by evidence-based guidelines which are widely viewed as a cornerstone of current efforts to define standards of care and improve the quality of clinical care [1]. At their best, clinical practice guidelines are based on clinical evidence and expert consensus and articulate clear goals of care, enumerate potentially beneficial therapeutic approaches, and may reduce undesirable variations in care while supporting rational clinical management of common conditions.
