We read with great interest the article by ’t Hart et al. reporting long-term quality of life (QoL) outcomes after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in the SleeveBypass trial [1]. In this large multicentre randomised study of 628 adults with severe obesity and five years of follow-up, both procedures led to substantial and sustained improvements in generic and disease-specific QoL. Apart from consistently better GERD-Q scores and somewhat higher GIQLI scores in the RYGB group, the authors observed only small between-group differences, with most effect sizes below 0.2, and concluded that QoL is broadly comparable after SG and RYGB.
