It is estimated that about 10 million of cases per year of venous thromboembolism (VTE) occur worldwide with substantial morbidity and mortality [1]. VTE affects mainly the older population with rates three times higher in patients older than 70 years respect younger people, with a disproportionate increase in pulmonary embolism (PE) [2].
