The recent paper by Hamzaoui et al. in the European Journal of Internal Medicine makes an important, timely case for targeted interventions to promote women’s careers in life sciences and medicine [1]. Authors’ recommendations echo a broader and growing recognition: scientific excellence depends not only on ideas and methods but also on deliberately cultivated, diverse talent [1]. Regrettably, gender issues as well as other social determinants including language, income, or nationality remain research hurdles well within this 21st century.
