We thank Liu and Jin for their thoughtful comments on our study [1,2]. We agree that the modelled cardiovascular and renal outcomes should be interpreted cautiously and conditionally on the underlying assumptions. Importantly, this was also the intended interpretation of our article, which was explicitly presented as hypothesis-generating rather than as evidence of a causal cardiorenal benefit of urate lowering.
