Vital signs are the simplest, cheapest and probably the most important information gathered on patients in hospital. In this narrative review we present a large amount of evidence that vital signs are currently little valued, not regularly or accurately recorded, and frequently not acted on appropriately. It is probable that few hospitals would keep their accreditation with regulatory bodies if they collected and acted on their laboratory results in the same way that they collect and act on vital signs.
