Managing infectious diseases is an ever increasing challenge keeping pace with rising antimicrobial resistance, emerging pathogens and changing treatment paradigms. In a changing world, COVID-19, climate change and worldwide air travel have been associated with the spread of new organisms and critical multidrug-resistant organisms [1–4]. The challenge in managing infectious diseases has been further complicated by the increase in immunocompromised patients, aging populations with increasing comorbidity, frailty, immune-senescence, dissemination of biological therapies and popularization of rescue techniques such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or renal replacement therapies that prolong life, but lead to extended stays in intensive care [5,6].
